US 3: Pick Up and Shake Down

Mel is definitely not a morning person. In fact, he regards anything before 9am as unreasonable and personally offensive; a vexation to his spirit, he says. I, on the other hand, am definitely a morning person; and on this particular…

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has s I wish I had a dollar for every time someone has said ‘Time Heals’ . . . it doesn’t!
Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive. Sadly, we were Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive.
Sadly, we were not able to find accommodation in Portomarin . . . so we pushed on up out of the valley for another 7km and finally found accommodation in the tiny village of Gonzar . . . and we were rewarded by what was probably the best meal we’ve had in Spain - and that’s saying a fair bit, because we’ve had many really good meals in Spain.
Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive. After the 100 Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive.
After the 100 km Marker, we continued to work our way down from the ranges to Portomarin.

The whole village of Portomarin was moved to its current location in the 1960s, when the Miño River was dammed to build the Belesar reservoir (Encoro de Belesar). This meant the old Portomarín village, originally built next to a Roman bridge in the Middle Ages was flooded.

The town’s original buildings, however, were preserved. The most important buildings of the village were moved piece by piece higher up the mountain, where the ‘new’ Portomarín was rebuilt. Among the buildings saved was the fortress-looking 12th-century Romanesque church: San Xoán de Portomarín [Church of Saint John] and the Saint Peter chapel, Capela de San Pedro.

The ‘new’ Portomarín celebrated its 50th anniversary in June 2013. In summer when water levels are low, it is still actually possible to see some of the buildings of the old original village, including its old bridge.
Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive. Well, isn’t Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive.
Well, isn’t it always the way . . . you walk 680 km over some pretty rocky, steep, muddy roads, and never put a foot wrong? But then, when sightseeing in Sarria, you trip and fall.

About an hour later, with 4 stitches above my eye and a couple in my foot, I was allowed out of hospital. So today’s walk was a bit more painful than usual.
Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive. From Alto San Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive.
From Alto San Roque we continued our climb to Alto Poio, where we too a break for coffee, before working our way back down to Triacastela.

This means that we have now walked 652 km since we left St Jean Pied de Port. We are now 138km out from Santiago de Compostela.
Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive. Another early Keeping Mel’s Camino Dream Alive.
Another early start this morning . . . O Cebreiro up to Alto San Roque and onward. Seven days to go . . . on this day next week, we arrive in Santiago de Compostela
